Interested in how the Ocicat was first bred?
Well read on...
The first Ocicat appeared in 1964, an unexpected outcome of an experiment
to create an Aby-point Siamese. The crossing of an Abyssinian with a
Siamese resulted in Aby-point kittens and a spotted kitten named Tonga by
Virginia Daly. Daly’s daughter called Tonga an Ocicat because of his
resemblance to an Ocelot. Tonga was never bred from and sold as a pet.
Other breeders were interested in the spotted cat and produced their own
‘Ocicats.’ Later the American Shorthair was added to broaden the genetic
base. The Ocicat was recognized for registration with the Cat Fanciers’
Association in 1966 and championship status in America in 1987.
There are around 15 breeders in the UK at the moment.
Description
The Ocicat is a medium to large animal with a long well muscled body that
is solid, hard, strong and athletic looking. A shorthaired spotty coat
with almond-shaped eyes and moderately large ears.
Temperament
Ocicats have a lovely nature and are very loving and loyal to their
owners. Ocicats are intelligent and can be taught simple tricks such as
to fetch.
